Paper Mills

Packagers who have discovered the competitive advantage of value-added packaging frequently have Michelman coatings applied by their paper converter. Tier sheets, for example, are commonly coated at the converter.

Coatings that provide grease resistance, MVTR, water resistance and corrosion inhibition are applied to kraft paper by size presses. Fiber board mills apply coatings for water/abrasion-resistance and corrosion inhibition at the water box.

Properties That Affect Paper Mills

Catalyst P1: Catalyst P1 is one part of a two part silicone release coating. This coating system provides release for virgin-rubber, asphalt and gum based products from corrugated containers eliminating the need for costly plastic bags. This system is not gluable.

Catalyst P1A: Catalyst P1A is one part of a two part silicone release coating. This coating system provides release for virgin-rubber, asphalt and gum based products from corrugated containers eliminating the need for costly plastic bags. This system is not gluable.

CleanGrip® 111: CleanGrip® 111 is an alumina based, nonskid coating designed to reduce the slipperiness of shipping containers by providing excellent slide angles. CleanGrip® 111 has a low pH that does not resolubilize ink and can prevent ink smearing. This product is gluable with both hot melt and cold set glues.

CleanGrip® 2100: CleanGrip® 2100 is a silica based, sprayable nonskid coating designed to reduce the slipperiness of shipping containers by providing excellent slide angles. Because CleanGrip® 2100 is easily cleanable, it takes the worry and mess out of running nonskids. This product is gluable using both hot melt and cold set adhesives.

CleanGrip® 2103: CleanGrip® 2103 is a high solids, sprayable nonskid coating designed to reduce the slipperiness of shipping containers. It provides excellent slide angles and meets most demanding specs. Because CleanGrip® 2103 is easily cleanable, it takes the worry and mess out of running nonskids. This product is both hot melt and cold set gluable.

Coating X300™ AF: Coating X300™AF provides high levels of water resistance and good moisture resistance for kraft paper. Coating X300™ AF protects food products from excessive moisture, freezer burn, and sticking. When diluted for mill application, it is an economical sizing agent. Gluability with hot melt adhesives is excellent, but cold set gluing is not recommended.

Coating X300™ Plus: Coating X300™ Plus provides high levels of water resistance and good moisture resistance for kraft paper with improved water resistance over Coating X300™. Coating X300™ Plus protects food products from excessive moisture, freezer burn, and sticking. Gluability with hot melt adhesives is excellent, but cold set gluing is not recommended.

HydraBan® 1000AF: HydraBan® 1000AF is an economical water based treatment for kraft paper. It imparts a high degree of water repellency, is printable and gluable.

HydraBan® 708: HydraBan® 708 is an economical, water based treatment for kraft paper. It imparts a high degree of water repellency, is printable and gluable. It can be applied at the wet end or dry end of the corrugator, or with an off-line treating operation.

Nomar™ 70AF: Nomar™ 70AF is a water based, gluable, non-abrasive coating generally used to provide abrasion protection for gas flushed food packaging or small appliances. Nomar™ 70AF is typically applied to the inner package or to shippers and partitions. This product is gluable with both cold set and hot melt glues.

Nomar™ 70AFN: Nomar™ 70AFN is a water based, gluable, non-abrasive coating generally used to provide abrasion protection for gas flushed food packaging or small appliances. It is typically applied to the inner package or to shippers and partitions. It contains no fluorocarbon or PFOA. Nomar™ 70AFN is gluable with both cold set and hot melt glues.

Nomar™ 70THIN: Nomar™ 70THIN is a low viscosity, gluable, non-abrasive coating designed for flexo applications. It is generally used to provide abrasion protection for gas flushed food packaging or small appliances. Nomar™ 70THIN is gluable with both cold set and hot melt glues.

Release Coat® 30: Release Coat® 30 is a lower solids, economical, one component coating that provides superior release for a variety of "sticky" products such as hot asphalt. Because it is a one component release system, it eliminates mixing and leftover material disposal. This product is neither hot melt nor cold set gluable.

Release Coat® 40: Release Coat® 40 is an easy-to-use one component silicone emulsion coating that provides superior release for a variety of "sticky" products such as hot asphalt. Because it is a one component release system, it eliminates mixing and leftover material disposal. This product is neither hot melt nor cold set gluable.

Release Coat® P1: Release Coat® P1 is one part of a two part silicone release coating. A catalyzed release coat system offers superior release and in most cases FDA compliance. This system is not gluable.

Release Coat® P1A: Release Coat® P1A is one part of a two part silicone release coating. A catalyzed release coat system offers superior release and in most cases FDA compliance. This system is not gluable.

RustBan® 105: RustBan® 105 is a Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor for corugated, solid fiber and other forms of paper board packaging to protect ferrous metals. This product is both hot melt and cold set gluable.

RustBan® 250: RustBan® 250 is a Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor for the protection of ferrous and nonferous metals. This product can be applied to corrugated, solid fiber and other forms of paperboard packaging. RustBan® 250 is both hot melt and cold set gluable.

VaporCoat® 2200R: VaporCoat® 2200R is a coating which provides water and grease resistance and excellent MVTR properties on kraft liner and other substrates. When properly applied over a base coat, this repulpable coating is recommended as a replacement for some curtain coating applications, poly-laminated board and plastic bags.
